Let’s talk about something that most small business owners will not admit to. In fact it’s a dirty little secret that seems almost a counterintuitive trait for small business owners or startup founders. It’s the fact that lots of business owners are procrastinators. How can it be that people who are racing around getting things done, often working well over 40 hours a week, are procrastinating? It’s because while they are busy working they are putting off important things.
There have been number occasions where I have run into a current client or a potential client and they have said, “I have been meaning to get a hold of you because I need…” The problem is they have put off contacting me for weeks or even months and the only reason they brought this need to my attention is because I happened to see them at a restaurant or at a networking event.
I have also encountered situations that a client contacts me because he is getting sued for something he knew should have been taken care of months earlier. I recently attended a Wealth Counsel seminar in which they said that something like 96% business owners agree they need a succession plan but only 13 % have one. These are both situations that a business attorney is not contacted until there is a problem.
I understand a business owner has a busy schedule. I am a small business owner myself. But getting caught up in things that will have short-term results and not taking care of things that will have long term impacts is a recipe for disaster.
Client or customer development is important to a business but what is the point of developing customers if you don’t have good contracts to solidify those transactions or deals? Starting product development is necessary for a startup but what about forming your new business and agreeing on ownership terms? Is a marketing campaign that much more important than ensuring that your liability is as limited as possible?
Contacting a Grand Rapids business law firm can help take care of a lot of these things. Often times meeting with your attorney will take less time than you think and the amount of time and money that you save down the road is well worth it. So what are you waiting for? To see me at your next networking event?
