Howard Hughes can teach modern entrepreneurs many lessons but there is one in particular that should always be heeded. It’s not Hughes’ theory on investing or always pushing innovation. It’s not about diversification or pushing the envelope. It’s that you should always surround yourself with the best talent. Hughes hired Noah Dietrich to be his accountant. Dietrich became Hughes’ closest advisor and his decisions created the Hughes empire. Hughes put the best people around him that did not just placate to his ego but instead made the best decisions for Hughes’ businesses.
West Michigan based Brewers Professional Alliance is a newly created partnership between various entities. The Brewers Professional Alliance is a group that was formed to provide new brewers with all the services they need to break into the newly fledgling beer industry in West Michigan. Instead of a brewer, that is looking to start his own brewery, having to go in search of three or more places for the services he needs, they will all be under one roof. Basically the Brewers Professional Alliance surrounds the brewer with the team he needs so he can focus on what he does best and not worry about the other things.
While there are not many collective groups like the Brewers Professional Alliance, the idea should still remain the same. Small businesses, especially startup businesses, need to put the right team around them. If you are an innovator that has developed a new product, it is likely that you are not an expert attorney, business owner, accountant, marketer, etc. It is likely that you are an expert at your product. Surrounding yourself with the right team can be the difference between success and failure. Grand Rapids startups have some great resources to support them and advise them. It’s a matter of those entrepreneurs taking the right steps to utilize those resources.
